Well, chemistry is done and our state testing has also been completed. The end of our chemistry unit focused on a recap of content and acid/base chemistry. I used an online lab called GEMS Alien Juice Bar activity. My students loved it and it helped them remember things like, acids neutralize bases and vice versa, as well as, what indicators are.
Some of my classes also looked at real life pH compared to online values on a website called Interactive Simulations: pH Scale. I particularly liked this simulation because it allowed them to manipulate H+ and OH- concentrations.
Now that state testing is finished, we are moving on to the atomic theory but in more detail (in most classes). I have one class that is not able to keep up with this curriculum, so we are doing student-driven experiments, similar to science fair. I really struggled with changing the curriculum in only one of my classes, but ultimately decided that it was in the best interest of my students. They have a good background in experimental design and this project will help them cement their knowledge and apply what they know. In the meantime, my other classes are moving right along in the atomic theory lesson and are about to start a full inquiry lab on identifying an unknown compound. With all of the focus on inquiry-based and full inquiry activities, I am hopeful that our state test scores will be higher this year, at least on the inquiry process.
Our scores have been low traditionally and I have spent the last couple years trying to figure out how to boost their scores. I am hopeful that this year will be our breakthrough year. One thing is for sure, the focus on inquiry this year has helped my students with problem solving and critical thinking. Test scores rising or not, that is what makes the effort worth it!
